REV. LAURA NUGENT-CARTER, LMSW
SPIRITUAL COUNSELOR
Knitting Project
Thanks to my mother-in-law, Alice Fitzroy Carter, I learned to knit in 2019. Years later, as I knitted adorable little sweater Christmas ornaments for friends and family, I had a profound realization: 'These are cute, but I am not helping anyone; people are living and sleeping outside in the cold.' This sparked a personal journey within me to knit hats for those in need. Since then, I've lovingly knit and given away about 500 hats. I share them with anyone I encounter while driving or walking around, and I've also handed them out at soup kitchens. With the help of a friend who ventures into the woods to find homeless encampments, I ensure that warmth and care reach those who need it most. The joy of creating something beautiful and valuable for others has been a source of inspiration and fulfillment in my life.
My Knitting Story
I was a hairstylist for over 20 years, specializing in cutting and styling. My career was incredibly passionate and successful until the day before my accident in 2007. I loved the artistic aspect of my work and the deep human connections I forged with clients and fellow stylists. Haircutting was my art, and the dry-cutting finishing technique I created was a true expression of creativity. The delicate shaping and styling that revealed each client's unique beauty set me apart. My love for this craft was a key element of my success.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to return to hairstyling since my accident. It has been 17 years now, and I still miss the industry and the art of it every day. With no outlet for my creative energy, I longed to work with my hands. There was a creative artist inside me that needed a release. When I was introduced to knitting by my mother-in-law, Alice Fitzroy Carter, it unlocked that creative side. Knitting became more than just a hobby; it transformed into a form of therapy and a way to heal, helping me find inner peace amid the chaos and trauma from my accident and the dramatic changes in my life.
Besides a creative outlet, knitting became a spiritual practice. With each stitch I knit or purl, I reflect on the person for whom I'm creating. I choose the yarn thoughtfully, considering the colors and textures that resonate best with the recipient. Whether we are strangers or old friends, each stitch is infused with my thoughts and prayers for you. I ponder your journey, the challenges you may face, and the joys you may embrace. Knitting for others deepens my sense of connection and fills me with purpose.
As I knit, I put my love, light, and healing energy into every stitch. When you wear this scarf or hat, my hope is that you feel the warmth and affection that has been crafted into it. I hope it brings a smile and peace to your heart. Let the love, healing energy, and prayers woven into this fabric surround you like a warm embrace, reminding you that you are never alone and that someone out there cares for you and wishes you well. I hope you can feel this love and care, which brings you comfort in your journey.
